A WORD ABOUT THE MOVIE
"Oasis" is based on a short story I wrote in college for a student literary magazine. The story itself was part of a series I wrote based on my own experiences growing up in the West, split between urban and rural identities. I wanted to write about the assumptions people make, and it was originally meant to be a commentary on identity and a bit of a self-deprecating parable. After graduating from college, I chose this story to adapt into my first short film because I wanted to tell a simple story clearly and visually. We shot three days spread out over 7 months with borrowed cameras and a great group of actors, technicians and friends I was lucky enough to meet while working as a camera assistant on set in Vancouver. My brother Rowen and I wrote and recorded three original songs for the soundtrack of the film, and country artist Lanie McAuley kindly sang on one of the tracks. I'm proud of what we accomplished with my first film thanks to so many generous and talented people. I learned a lot and I'm excited to be starting a new project now with those skills and lessons in my back pocket.
